I knew by the distress in Dad's voice that things were not as rosy as I thought. The year was 2000 and I was living in Auburn, working for a law firm. My parents were in their 80s but doing quite well—or so it seemed.

One summer evening Dad took me aside to ask if we could visit the local senior centers. Dad was on the original committee when Eskaton decided to build in Grass Valley, so he had a good idea about the facilities up here. He felt it was time, and he knew he couldn't take care of their multi-acre home in Nevada City as he had done for the past 35 years. He was scared about so many things.

On this late August night I heard something in Dad's voice that made me realize more was needed from me. The only alternative was for me to move in, which is what Dad and Mom preferred.

The following spring I moved into the downstairs bedroom and started looking for an in-home care provider that would be in the home while I was at work. The time and effort it took for us to find someone we could trust and who was competent was daunting.

I didn't know where to start or who to ask. It was a risky and uncertain task. We did not know what or who we could be inviting into our home. The chance of losing valuables or financial security was high.
